Scavenger Hunt

My recent body of work, Scavenger Hunt, combines drawing and painting to examine the overlooked environment and the creativity it sparks.

As a mother of three children, I find it easiest to incorporate my children into my creative process. Scavenger Hunt begins with my children’s collections of treasures from our backyard. Instead of discarding these items, I use them as the source of my abstractions. A grid guides my abstraction from an organic object into a pen drawing. I create multiple pen drawings until I achieve the line quality, tension, and movement I desire. I then translate the pen composition into an oil painting. I use wax, pen, and pencil to create a depth of surface within the painting.

By elevating these objects, I highlight to my children that small ideas from our lives can be the source of a fulfilling creative practice while continuing my progression as an artist.
